Works With Netflix

PIA’s US streaming-optimized servers accessed Netflix US on the first try. A couple of episodes of Brooklyn 99 played in perfect quality and without buffering. The quality stayed consistent across both East and West locations. The experience was smooth on the desktop app and Smart DNS on the TV.

My teammates confirmed working access to Netflix in Canada, India, Spain, and Turkey using regular servers. Japan only worked with non-optimized Tokyo servers, while Finland’s failed entirely. Netflix libraries in Brazil, Poland, and South Africa also didn’t load during our tests.

Works With Hulu

PIA worked flawlessly with Hulu, although I’ve read several review sites reporting to the contrary. The US streaming-optimized servers (both East and West) worked on the first attempt. Only Murders in the Building streamed without any buffering in UHD.

Works With Disney+

The US East streaming-optimized server and accessed Disney+ on the first try. I had heard that this platform is notorious for blocking VPNs, but thankfully, PIA worked without any issues. We replicated the test across 8 different locations in the US, and the result was the same.

Works With HBO Max

PIA is one of the few streaming services that works reliably with Max to watch exclusive TV shows and movies. It was easy to stream popular shows, like Game of Thrones, The Righteous Gemstones , and Hacks in UHD using PIA’s streaming server in the US.

Doesn’t Work With: DAZN and 10Play

PIA couldn’t access DAZN or Australia’s 10 Play during my tests , even with streaming-optimized servers in the US and Australia. I reached out to support, but they confirmed these services aren’t officially supported and shared an outdated list of compatible platforms. Smart DNS didn’t help either; both sites showed playback or region errors.

Overall, I was pleased with the breadth of the services it worked with. However, if you’re looking for a better VPN, CyberGhost has streaming-optimized servers for DAZN in multiple countries.

Stream in UHD with PIA

Speed — Nearby Servers Stay Fast for UHD Streaming and Gaming

PIA is a good VPN for high-bandwidth activities like streaming and gaming if you use its nearby servers. My speeds only dropped significantly when I connected to one of the farthest servers in the US. My connections were also, on average, 4% faster with the WireGuard protocol compared to OpenVPN (UDP) 128-bit.

Speed Test Results

I ran multiple tests using a MacBook Pro in Malaysia on a 100Mbps line. The baseline speed was 87.46Mbps using PIA’s default settings, OpenVPN (UDP) with 128-bit encryption. I then compared performance across regions using both OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols. Here are the results I got:

Despite being far from my location, Australia’s server in Melbourne had the lowest drop , just 1.2%, even better than Malaysia. The US showed the biggest slowdown, but speeds were still usable for streaming and browsing. WireGuard consistently outperformed OpenVPN across all regions.

Gaming Speed — Local Servers Are Suitable for Lag-Free Gaming

I always got PIA to automatically connect to the fastest server and had consistently high speeds and low ping while playing games. Ping (latency) is the most important metric to look out for when gaming. The lower it is, the faster your inputs are being sent to the server and back, giving you a lag-free experience.

I tested this by playing a few games, and PIA turned out to be one of the best VPNs for Call of Duty: Warzone . It’s a fast-paced online game where every millisecond counts, so a laggy VPN connection just wouldn’t work. Fortunately, the local server that PIA connected me to had a ping of just 41ms , which was still well within the recommended range of <100ms.

PIA’s massive server network is great for flexibility and US-specific access. All servers allow port forwarding and P2P traffic. Due to this, PIA is better than most VPNs for torrenting, but less reliable for censorship-heavy regions like China.

Server Network — One of the Largest Server Networks I’ve Seen

PIA has one of the largest server networks available , with over 29,650+ servers in 91 countries, including all 50 US states. That level of US coverage is rare and especially useful for accessing local banking services, state-specific news, and blacked-out sports streams while traveling.

Roughly half of PIA’s locations use virtual servers to maintain access in harder-to-reach countries like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. These locations don’t host physical infrastructure. Instead, PIA routes your traffic through nearby secure data centers . In the app, virtual locations are marked with a globe icon so you can identify them easily.

PIA’s network is built entirely on NextGen bare-metal servers with 10 Gbps uplinks , placed in third-party audited data centers and controlled end-to-end by PIA. Every server is also RAM-only, meaning it wipes all data automatically with every reboot, so there’s no stored information even if a server is seized.
