In a Rush? Here are the Quick Facts!

  • Hitachi launched a new AI maintenance service powered by Nvidia technology
  • The Japanese company asset manager HMAX will integrate the NVIDIA IGX platform
  • The new technology is expected to reduce railway costs and idling time as well as improve accuracy and reliability

The Japanese company Hitachi launched a new AI-powered railway maintenance service in partnership with the tech giant Nvidia.

According to Nvidia , Hitachi—which operates railway systems in more than 50 countries— will use its NVIDIA IGX platform to analyze data from its new HMAX asset manager. The new HMAX uses sensors and cameras to gather operational data and now with the AI technology integration the companies expect to reduce train idling time, and maintenance costs for rail operators, and improve transit reliability for customers.

“Using previous digital monitoring systems, it would take a few days to process the data and discover issues that need attention,” said Koji Agatsuma, executive director and chief technology officer of rail vehicles at Hitachi Rail. “If we can instead conduct real-time prediction using NVIDIA technology, that enables us to avoid service disruptions and significantly improve safety, reliability and operating costs.”

HMAX technology is currently gathering data from 2,000 trains—about 8,000 train cars—and each Hitachi Rail train could have around 50,000 data points as it does in the U.K. All this information usually takes days to process, and with the new NVIDIA technology, the companies expect to get analysis within seconds for real-time solutions and optimization.

According to Kyoto News , Hitachi is already deploying the new AI technology in routes in Italy and Britain. “We believe AI has immediate and very impactful applications that will make railways run more efficiently,” said Hitachi Rail Chief Executive Officer Giuseppe Marino at InnoTrans.

Nvidia keeps building new alliances with its AI technology. It also partnered with Richtech Robotics a few days ago to launch the bartender robot Scorpio.

Brazil Set to Ban Online Betting Over Gambling Addiction Concerns

In a Rush? Here are the Quick Facts!

  • Brazil’s president said online betting will be banned if “addiction” is not under control soon
  • Brazilians have been using welfare program money on sports bets
  • 500 to 600 sports betting websites will be shut down

The Brazilian government is trying to solve a sports gambling situation among its citizens, currently affecting household incomes. This Sunday, the president President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said that online betting websites will be banned if new regulations don’t solve the “addiction.”

According to Reuters , soccer and bet-loving Brazilians have developed an increasing interest in sports betting since it was legalized in the country in 2018. This has affected vulnerable communities and bankrupted families.

After the municipal elections in Sao Paulo, Lula addressed the topic: “If regulation doesn’t work, I won’t hesitate in putting an end to (betting) definitively.”

Since 2003 , The government has been distributing money to reduce poverty and inequality with its Bolsa Familia welfare program and earlier this year the central bank revealed that Brazilian recipients of these benefits had spent 3 billion reais ($550 million) on bets. Lula said it was unacceptable that low-income families were using the money for this purpose.

The government is considering regulating the use of the Bolsa Familia money to ban online bets , but an official announcement has yet to be made regarding this.

“Everyone knows that the person going to buy bread in the morning will make a small bet using the bread money,” said Lula. “But what I cannot allow is betting to turn into a disease, an addiction, and for people to become dependent on it, because I know people who lost their house and car.”

According to The Brazilian Report , last week Fernando Haddad, Brazil’s Finance Minister, announced that 500 to 600 sports betting websites will be taken offline during October as they didn’t comply with the new regulation requirements.

Brazil has also recently suspended social media platform X , and Meta decided to suspend generative AI services after the government’s requirements and concerns for data use.
